Special needs is an umbrella term for a wide array of diagnoses, from those that resolve quickly to those that will be a challenge for life and those that are relatively mild to those that are profound. Children with special needs may have developmental delays, medical conditions, psychiatric conditions, and/or congenital conditions. These special needs require accommodations so children can reach their potential.
No matter the reason, the special needs designation is useful. It can help you obtain needed services, set appropriate goals, and gain an understanding of your child and the stresses your family may face.
We work directly with families who have a relative with a cognitive disability and help them to see the difference it can make to the whole family, when the disabled individual finds and plays their part in, family life. Often those affected by cognitive disabilities can be seen as a burden to their families, as there is very little expectation that they can do anything of any help. All individuals have the ability to learn something, and so we raise the expectations of families and show them the possible capability of their disabled relative and so they are less of a burden and more of a valued family member.
